You have probably heard the story of a frog being kissed by a princess. There is another story of a young man who also heard a frog calling out, “Please kiss me, I’ll become a beautiful princess and be yours for a day.” He quickly picked it up and put it in his backpack. The poor frog pleaded for a kiss and kept increasing the reward from a day to a week to month to a year, but to no avail. Finally, when the young man did not react to an offer of a lifetime of companionship, the frog finally asked as to why it was not being kissed. The young man casually walked on and said “Look I am an engineer … a talking frog is really cool as far as I am concerned.”
‘Kissing the Frog’ to get the handsome prince is a metaphor for all the intimidating opportunities in your life that you would rather avoid than explore. It also implies moving out of your comfort zone. Contrary to the engineer above, by the time students finish their engineering; they are no longer scared to kiss the metaphorical frog or even any anthropomorphic creatures. For instance, many students move out of their comfort zone when they migrate to cities and even villages to pursue their engineering.
The auspicious occasion of engineering day is perhaps the perfect time to reminisce and relive some of the student experience. Undoubtedly, engineering college was one place that made me feel alive, excited and helped shape my character.

With a large section of the intellectual population heading in this direction, the frontiers of engineering have expanded through the years. Colleges and universities have been striving all this time to establish excellence in various fields and many new areas of engineering have streaked out as a result of these efforts. Alongside, conventional areas like computers, electronics, mechanical, etc., a new species of engineering has been born; disciplines like chemical, textile, IT, metallurgy, polymers, biotechnology, etc. have been fast catching up.
Sunil Goel, director, GlobalHunt tells us how these fields have been growing and acquiring a favourable place in the market for themselves, "It has been observed that fields like aerospace, mining and metallurgy engineering are gaining momentum because of their huge demand in the current market scenario. Of late, there has been a lot of focus on mining and metallurgy; civil engineering is growing because of an ever-increasing demand for real estate and infrastructure. Aerospace is also becoming important because a large number of people from urban area and tier 1 cities are opting to cover long distance travel by air. Specialists in these fields have bright future and their demand will continue to grow in the coming years."
A curious observation in these fields is the fact that engineers from these relatively obscure areas have made their places even in seemingly unrelated sectors like IT, manufacturing, electrical companies, etc. Though this may seem strange, it is not actually a surprising scenario. Iqbal Singh Jagdeva, MD, Turbo Consultancy Services Pvt. Ltd. explains, "No industry or sector can function on its own today. Almost every discipline present in the market is now intricately connected with several other fields. In such a situation, it is quite natural that engineers from these new fields are today working in sync with those of the conventional ones to create equilibrium and excellence in any area. Besides, if we are to compare the curriculum of engineering of different departments, we can easily observe that a major portion of study is common to all disciplines. These typical topics enable engineers to function in any industry satisfactorily while the rest of the curriculum provides them a speciality in a particular field."

Life Without Civil Engineering
The first question we have to ask is - Are we providing need-based education to our students? Does the education help the student to understand the problems and try to solve them? Are the students ready to take up the challenges, when they pass out of college? Are we forcing students to stick to the syllabus and question paper patterns of the university system?
